Found the solution :)

IE is my standard browser, but I use Avant instead. When Avant is running (which it usually is), watir uses that instance. Unfortunately usage of Avant causes the exception. I closed it, startet IE 6, ran the example and it worked.

Is there a way to tell watir to use a specific browser, like "run c:\system\ie.exe"?
