Thank you for your reply Paul. I've doubled and tripled checked and there is not another element with the same name, "txtInitialDate"
HOWEVER..... there is a hidden input with the name "txtInitialDatePost" so maybe watir is matching with a regex? that would explain. Is it possible to enumerate the elements in the collection and get their types? I'm a total newbie to vbscript and the documentation has confused me a lot.
