Moin Deutschland,

Gute Nacht,

Chris

EYUC 2013 Roundup day 1 and 2

Hi Europe,

41 national teams are gathered here in Cologne, to play out the four divisions:
Junior (U20) women and open, and U17 girls and open. The ASV Cologne stepped in
9 months ago to make this unique event possible, and have put in a great show.

The tournament started with a ceremony and the opening match Monday afternoon,
with beautiful weather and high spirits. Some 1000 people  in the ASV Cologne
stadium then witnessed the comeback of the GBR U17 open squad, who after a 5th
place in 2012 came back strong to take on the champions and hosts, Germany, in
a hot match to take half time at 8:6. In the second half, they kept it up while
GER had some unforced errors, to secure the first GBR victory in this event.

Tuesday then had the same fabulous weather, 28 degrees and sunny.

First surprises: U17

The brand new Dutch U17 girls team beat GBR 13:11, and GER beat the current
champion AUT. More excitement comes tomorrow, when the classic GER-GBR match
takes place. In U17 open, the closest match was seed 3 FRA beating seed 5 AUT,
but subsequently AUT beat #2 seed Israel. ISR had started with a 15:09 victory
over SWE. So GBR is in the lead as the only team with 2 wins, followed by FRA,
AUT, GER, ISR, SWE and IRE with 1 victory.

Junior divisions

Germany Junior Women and Junior Open started with a 17:0 victory each, but the
open team then faced a fierce Israel, who took the lead at 6:5. Final score,
after amazing scenes from both teams, was 17:12 for Germany. GBR and FRA open
go undefeated, but the Swedes gave FRA one hell of a match, ending 14:15. After
SWE beat IRE 16:15, IRE now faces FRA in the morning, hoping to force them into
a 3 way tie in pool C. The Czech republic surprized Italy 17:09, an susequently
also beat FIN 17:03. AUT beat the same 2 teams, so the pool final between AUT
and CZE at 11:30 today will be a highlight.

CZE women did likewise, beating GBR and ISR. FRA women had to bough to newcomer
AUT 12:16, and Latvia had a slow 1:7 start against Finland, so FIN won 17:11.
GER seems              the team to beat, after their clear two victories today,
but ITA and AUT also go undefeated.
ISR vs IRE and FRA vs RUS will be exciting games, the 11:30 time slot looks
veeery promising, as the two neighbours duels, SVK-CZE and GBR-IRE later in the
day.

The Junior open already move on to the 2nd round in the afternoon, whereas all
other divisions continue in pool play. You can find all tournament info,
schedules and results on line, at

The organization is running smoothly, and the excellent fields, 8 pitches side
by side on the premises known from the Disc Days Cologne, are a perfect base
for the tournament. The sunny weather is keeping spirits up, we actually hope
for some more clouds so the teams do not wear out too much before the playoff
stage. Quarters and semis happen on Thursday and Friday, and finals Saturday.

All the best,

Chris
