NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL PROCLAMATION: BLACK PROTEST FOR
PEACE MONTH

A proclamation from the New York City Council making February "Black
Protest for Peace Month" was presented to the ANSWER coalition at a City
Hall press conference on Feb. 7.

The proclamation was co-sponsored by council members Bill Perkins and
Charles Barron. Perkins has also introduced an anti-war resolution to
the City Council, but it is still in committee.

Barron and Perkins were joined at the press conference by the Rev.
Herbert Daughtry of the House of the Lord church; the ANSWER coalition's
Larry Holmes; Gail Walker of IFCO/Pastors for Peace and the ANSWER
Coalition; Pat Chin of Brooklyn Bedford-Stuyvesant for Peace; Monica
Moorehead of Millions for Mumia; and Kevin Mohammed of the Nation of
Islam.

The proclamation reads in part, "Black history is nothing if not the
history of struggle against what Dr. King called the three evils:
racism, poverty and militarism; these social and societal ills, which
are firmly in our thoughts during Black History Month, can all be
connected to the very real need to stop this war."

Accepting the proclamation, Holmes said, "The New York City Police
Department as of this date is refusing to grant a march permit for the
Feb. 15 mass march and rally for peace. But we're here today to say that
on that day, Black leaders are going to march, ANSWER will be there, and
the rest of the peace movement will be there--permit or not."
