If you're intent on compiling for Windows, and not opposed to using
Microsoft software, you can try using Visual C++ Express edition to
compile wxWidgets and wxArt2D.  It's free and quite nice.

I've never managed to get MSYS to work properly for me, and even if I
did, the compilers are always outdated (GCC 3.4.x, etc.).  Cygwin
doesn't seem any better.  In such cases I've resorted to using virtual
machines of Linux rather than bothering with the GNU ports for
Windows.
