I just attempted a fresh CMake build using 2.9.0 and had the same problem. However, I found I needed to enable Unicode in the initial configuration. Try messing with the various checkboxes for wxWidgets to see which one corresponds to the build you're using. I ought to take screenshots of the process for documentation (least of all so I can remember how to do it next time as well).
