I've certainly run into something similar to this on my Mac long ago -
using the wxWidgets which is pre-installed on the Mac (a variant of
wxWidgets 2.5.x, I think) - you need to ensure that wxHaskell is
compiled with the same Unicode (or not) configuration as your
wxWidgets library. The Mac provided version does require Unicode.
