Hmm... this is the darcs version of wxhaskell you're building, right? The official one is very much out of date and doesn't know about Unicode. If you are using that version... then I'm not sure. Perhaps you're not building with the version of wxWidgets you think you're using. It might be worth checking to see what "which wx-config" does, to see which one the wxhaskell ./configure script picked up.
