Sorry, this mail isn't going to be too helpful.  But I have
experienced the problem before, so at somebody here knows what you're
dealing with.  I don't remember if I have solved it, or how.  Grepping
my source code does not reveal anything obvious.  I suspect I ended up
just making my textCtrls larger. :-(

Maybe you could see if you can solve the problem in wxWidgets (i.e.
with a little sample C++ program)...
