Daniel,
I don't see this behavior for Wx::Toolbar::InsertTool when I run the
wxperl_demo. What version and platform are you using? Maybe updating
or rolling back your Wx or Alien-wxWidgets install will help.
My environment:
Windows XP
Perl 5.8.8, ActivePerl build 819
Wx version 0.79
Alien-wxWidgets 0.32.42.5
Wx-Demo version 0.10

If you insert a tool, the toolbar changes its size to the width of the tools. That means, it has no longer the width of the window and that doesn't look good. You can see this behaviour in the toolbar.pl sample.

file.
