Try the wxWANTS_CHARS style for the control/panel whatever you want to handle the key events. Not sure if it will work but it helped me with some issues where a parent window was "stealing" key events I wanted a child to handle.

    as some of you may know if a widgets is aprented by a WxNotebook
    all Ctrl+Pg****[+**] key events are bound to tab changing.
    is there a way to get it back for own control of changing tabs
