Finally I went with the original suggestion of Mattia and managed to build it on an Ubuntu 8.04 (6.04 was just too old and needed lot of extra things) and then I tried it on both Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 and it was working.
I am now trying to fix various issues I encountered and improve the build system but I hope this will work on other distributions as well.
