Ok. So we have some agreement.

Ok. I certainly wouldn't do anything that I thought could harm my
system Perl. If for some reason I *had* to do something like that, I'd
consider it reasonable to put a new copy of Perl in /usr/local. That
said, I have never had any need for that. I guess it depends on what
else you are doing with your Perl that could break it.

Sure. CPAN should work everywhere. I wouldn't suggest otherwise. Not
Ubuntu's fault though. :)
