Hi John - let's try to get the local one working first, before going on to
remote (choose "local connection" instead of "remote connection" in the
x10_platform.conf file).  The directory you mention below is created by
X10DT when you click the "Validate Configuration" button in the editor for
the x10_platform.conf file.  Is this when you see the error below?

It's attempting to create the directory, put the source code for your
program there, and compilation output goes there too.  It gets deleted
after the validation completes.

Are you able to create this directory from a command line ok, and put files
in it?  Could /tmp/ be full on your machine?

When configuring x10 with server and client components on the same machine
(and also in the case of different machines to), the following error
consistently occurs:

Error: cd: 1: can't cd to /tmp/x10-validation-jsrobin-08-11-50

during validation.

/tmp is not referred to in the configuration panels and it has universal rw
access:

ls -ld /tmp

drwxrwxrwt 24 root root 4096 2012-07-08 20:17 /tmp
