I am pleased to report that our 2012 HPC Challenge submission won the
"Best Performance Award" in Class II at SuperComputing'12 in Salt Lake
City (and a $1000 check). Awards in this category are based 50% on
performance, and 50% on code elegance, clarity and size. The distinguished
awards panel makes its decision based on a report, code for benchmarks,
and a presentation.
The submission was authored by Olivier Tardieu, David Grove, Bard Bloom,
David Cunningham, Benjamin Herta, Prabhanjan Kambadur, Vijay Saraswat,
Avraham Shinnar, Mikio Takeuchi and Mandana Vaziri of IBM Research.
Olivier Tardieu presented.
Our submission was based on X10 code for Global HPL, Global Random Access,
Global FFT, EP Stream (Triad), and Unbalanced Tree Search (UTS) benchmarks
and performance runs on the PERCS machine. All benchmarks were run at 32K
cores, some also at 55K cores. We showed good scaling and good to
outstanding absolute performance on all benchmarks.
For FFT, Random Access, HPL, and Stream we delivered about 42% / 76% / 80%
/ 85% of the performance delivered by the best tuned code for this
machine (IBM's Class I entry to the HPC Competition).
Our UTS numbers are significantly better than other UTS implementations
(MPI, UPC) on this machine achieving 98% parallel efficiency.
All benchmarks were written in under 600 lines of X10 code each (in some
cases we used existing sequential libraries in C in addition).
A submission from Cray using the Chapel language was given the "most
elegant" award in Class II. The two other finalists were Charm++ from the
Univ of Illinois (Urbana Champaign) and XcalableMP from the University of
Tsukuba.
We entered this competition previously in 2007, 2008, 2009 (the last two
times jointly with the IBM UPC team). Each time we have won an award.
