This is because xrdb by default will try to run your resource files through the C preprocessor. After installing a new version of Xcode you need to accept the license before you can run the C preprocessor.

If you don't need the C preprocessor for your resource files you can pass the -nocpp option to xrdb and I assume you won't need to accept the Xcode license.

I installed Xquartz 2.7.8 today (on Yosemite), and when it came back up, my

messages:

   11/5/15 1:46:08.000 PM org.macosforge.xquartz.startx[20239]: Agreeing to the
Xcode/iOS license requires admin privileges, please re-run as root via sudo.

Well, that’s odd. Why would starting up Xquartz get into the Xcode license? I
hadn't run Xcode for awhile, not since it was last updated, and sure enough, it
prompted me to agree to the latest Xcode/iOS license, so I did. I quit Xcode
and Xquartz, then restarted Xquartz, and now my xterms again have the correct
font and the scrollbar is enabled, just like things used to be, and the log
messages are no longer appearing.
