Sounds like a non X-11 is not playing nice. Try leaving an xterm running with top -u. Hopefully whatever is causing this, will steal enough CPU cycles to be noticeable, especially when you end up with seeing xterms, but you’re in your browser. If you use mission control try pinning or unpinning X-11 to a particular desktop.
