1) Did you logout and log back in after the XQuartz install?  If not, do that 
first.

2) What's the output of 'echo $DISPLAY' both locally and remotely after you ssh 
to the other system?

3) What does happen when you try to run the remote emacs?  Do you get any 
particular error messages?
