No need to backup.  The 2.7.7 installer will downgrade you just fine.

Nope.  You likely did 'launchctl unload -w 
/Library/LaunchAgents/org.macosforge.xquartz.startx.plist' which isn't undone 
by upgrading.  If you deleted that file as your solution, then you'd need to 
make the change again.

This is the repo as imported to git from MacPorts.  I still need to go through 
this and get it cleaned up for import into XQuartz github:

The only delta since then in the scripts is the addition of '[[ -e 
/opt/X11/lib/X11/xinit/launchd_startx ]] && touch /tmp/.xquartz_first_time' to 
the pre-install script.
