I haven't run X11 on my Mac for a long time, but I used to run other window managers (it's currently set up to run blackbox, but I think before I switch to bb I ran metacity via ssh, or maybe xfwm via ssh). They work but I remember there were issues, related to how they interacted with window focus I think, but this was so long ago I don't really remember.
