I tried installing macports using the no-root option and found that XQuartz
insists on installing LaunchDaemons in /Library/LaunchDaemons to start
processes up as user root. Is root privileges always required for XQuartz?

I would assume this if it needs direct access to hardware, yes. I think
Linux has KMS which allows rootless X, unsure if MacOS has that. Maybe
it's required for security?

I'm a little curious and reading over:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/xinit/launchd to understand this,
appreciate any guidance here.

Thanks
