In x264 style you could have a setting that sets the used 'demuxer' (akin to --demuxer in x264).
Some builds of x264 could include libav splitters, supporting a range of input formats directly; x265 is far from that, yet.
Naturally the name of the setting could be changed if there are better ideas.
Many future changes are expectable anyway. So for now, your suggestion is probably sufficient, Steve.
