I tested a bit in a VirtualBox and found that v0.8+149 (last XP compatible build before introducing the new threading model) works on an Unicore CPU in Windows XP SP3, but 0.8+247 (one 32 bit build which compiles in MSYS with WINXP_SUPPORT enabled again) reports disabled parallelism and using single thread mode, but then crashes when starting to encode. Setting the virtual machine to have at least 2 cores, encoding starts.

But well ... noone should want to work in single thread mode; version 0.8+149 worked with less than 1 fps in preset ultrafast with a 640x272 video.
