OK- Thanks to your help I did put xfce4 on. It seems to work.
However, I find that while it does seem to get me to the desktop, I still have the same ridiculously slow response speed that I had within the gnome environment. Do you think it could be related to the fact that it's an Amazon EC2 micro instance? Using htop I am watching the CPU usage of x2go and it's around 30% while just staring at the desktop. It takes about 3 minutes to respond to clicks. I'm using 64k jpg. Should I be using some other setting? that the best thing to use?
