Thank you for the reply. gnome-shell --version reports 3.10.4 and gnome-session --version returns 3.9.90 with no composite extension in the server. I am not an administrator of the remote server, so it seems that I have to give up gnome. What about Unity then? It's the default GUI for ubuntu.
PS: Mate desktop works but I don't know how to play with it.
