One thing you could do - of course, this needs to be done in advance - is start up a minimal desktop environment (say,e.g. only OpenBox) on your workstation, then spawn X2GoClient directly on the workstation/OpenBox session, treating the Workstation as X2GoServer and X2GoThinClient in one box. Start up a MATE session inside that X2GoClient, connecting to localhost, then, when you want to connect remotely, simply force-suspend that session and reattach to it. This will give you native X2Go speed, rather than the more VNC-like session shadowing.
