I have been looking at the corresponding x2go code and rereading your comment. I don't see how a failing ssh connection could kill your vpn. I'd rather think it is the other way round: There's something fishy with your vpn and that makes the ssh connections fail. Does the vpn go down if you do not even run an x2go connection but a normal ssh connection over it? Do you see information in dmesg after the x2go session failed?
