Hey Paul,
Any help at all is welcome. Why don't you take a look at the doc and the
source code and look for something that interests you? You could also
browse the bugs and see if something looks interesting. Asking questions
might help as well, since it might direct your search through the code.
There's also the tried-and-true technique of building a debuggable version
and stepping through the code. If you have a copy of MSVC, things will
much easier, although the GUI interfaces for gdb are much improved these
days.
I'm going to try writing up a brief proposal for the extension element
implementation, so perhaps we can start some discussion on the list.
If you're interested in software tools, a cool project would be a visual
debugger for Xalan!

Dave, I'll offer you all the help I can. You're obviously doing a fine job.
However all I can offer you at the moment is testing and perhaps
documentation assistance as I am (i) new to XML never mind Xalan and (ii)
an ex-development manager dusting off his old programming skills after
deciding to run his own open source software tools company (rather than his
boss's closed source software tools company).
