Have found that the Debian Xalan package has been orphaned at 1.2 so will pick up and re-package at 1.4 (and beyond) assuming there are no objections - let me know.
On the offchance it is of use - am doing some work to get to compile/run under NetBSD. Let me know if interested in patches.
