The short answer is - yes. I got it up and running in a couple hours of
tweaking. No changes to the source code were required if my memory serves me
correctly after 2 years. Some changes were required to the project files
though (MSVC++ V7/8/9). The same amount of effort was required to compile
against Xerces-c 3+.
I think my previous posts wrt MSVC++ 2005 outline the steps I took to
compile and link.
I would recommend trying it and seeing how far you get.
It's all moot until you actually try it.

I said "may need," because I've never tried it myself. By "tweaking" I
mean making small changes to the source code.
