I don't know of any way to do it with the current Makefiles.
It would be great if someone could help out by converting the build
system to a standard autoconf/automake setup, instead of the hacked
thing we have now.
Unfortunately, I don't have the time or the expertise in that area to do
it, although I'd be happy to help with testing.
