Why another DOM implementation?

Why does Xalan have yet another DOM implementation (stree) for it internal use? Transformation performance is one of my biggest concerns and so even if I generate a DOM in my code, to eliminate XML parsing, it will be converted to the internal DOM before being transformed. Was there any cost benefit analysis done comparing the cost of using the W3C DOM to the cost of the conversion to stree?   Ted X.
