I had that problem as well.  Since I wanted to spend time using the
library v's trying to compile it I installed the RedHat 7.1 egcs
packages and tweaked the Xalan make file to use egcs instead of gcc.

It all worked and I know have the beginnings of a Pyhton to Xalan
binding.  :-)
