+ Just as a sidenote, there is no need for the cost of a
+ multiply here: ((x<<1)+x) is dirt-cheap and completely
+ equivalent to 3*x ... this is a standard-issue trick in
+ performance-critical code. Possibly the compiler even
+ optimizes 3*x to this anyway.
