Assuming you are on Solaris, this is doc'd in the FAQ. You must use GNU tar...

I am having issues with the tar file xalan-j_2_2_D9.tar.gz  downloaded from http://xml.apache.org/xalan-j/index.html. Expanding the file gives a checksum error.
Pls. advise if there are any other links that could give the errorfree tar file.
