Great idea - I hadn't realized how simple it was to add appending or else I'd have tried it myself. I'll try to get some time today to add this append feature and an appropriate test/tests/extensions/java test for it as well.
Note the normal way to submit patches is with the cvs command, as documented in ... wait, where is it documented? Ho hum, I've forgotten where we put that. In any case, this is a straightforward enough patch I can add in anyways.
