I _think_ it was taken out because checking the whole stack every time we called another template was computationally expensive and was costing us a significant chunk of performance. Might be possible to reintroduce it under a conditional, to be turned on if and only if you think you've got a recursion poblem. On the other hand, it might be simpler to register a trace listener and find the cycle by looking at that... or perhaps to do the cycle detection in the trace listener itself ... and just plug that in when you need it.
