NullPointerException in org.apache.xpath.objects.XRTreeFrag.xstr

(SORRY FOR ALSO PUTTING THESE COMMENTS AGAINST 5609. THEY SHOULD HAVE GONE
HERE, AGAINST 6156.)

As much as I'd hoped that the 5982 fix took care of my problem, it doesn't
appear to have fixed it. I downloaded "xalan-j_2_3_D1-bin.zip" dated 27-Jan,
and copied XALAN.JAR and XML-APIS.JAR into my classpath. I also downloaded
Xerces 1.4.4 and put XERCES.JAR into my classpath. I got the same
NullPointerException with these versions.

On a side note, the 2.3.D1 doc says that I don't need to download Xerces
independently, that XERCESIMPL.JAR in 2.3.D1 contains the Xerces classes. But
when I tried using XERCESIMPL.JAR instead of the the independently downloaded
XERCES.JAR, I received the following error:

Z:\QA\XMLConfig>xmltests
[java] java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/xerces/framework/XMLParser
[java] Exception in thread "main"
[java] Java Result: 1

Is this another bug, or did I misunderstand the requirements?

Either way, though, it appears that Xalan 2.3.D1 still has the NPE I reported.
