You cannot do this with the Xalan source tree, but you can wrap the Xerces DOM if you want to do transformations and/or XPath searches. The drawback is that it's much more memory-intensive and much slower. Look through the samples and the documentation for more information. There is also a wealth of information in the mailing list archives, both on xalan-dev and xalan-c-users:
