(Which is a large part of why variables have one-time-set behavior; changing them would hamstring attempts to optimize stylesheets by reordering them.) Note that extensions that store their data somewhere else would be at real risk of unpredictable behavior for the same reason. Generally, the right answer is to rethink the problem and rewrite your stylesheet nonprocedurally. If you can't, the popular-but-extremely-ugly solution for assigning a new value to a variable is to recurse via call-template and parameter passing.
