It probably would have more performance impact. On the other hand, it would allow designing an interactive response: "Your stylesheet's execution stack is now 300 templates deep. This may be an infinite recursion. Should we proceed for another 300?" (The right answer is probably to support both the simple limit counter and the tooling-based approach.)
