To be more specific:

xml-xalan/java/bin/xml-apis.jar is a precompiled jar of SAX/DOM/JAXP
classes that's taken from an xml-commons project release.

xml-xalan/java/src/xml-commons-src.tar.gz is the set of .java sources
that created xml-apis.jar, and is also from an xml-commons project
release.  (We include the sources so we can build javadoc and so
developers have them to be able to debug against)

xml-commons/java/external/src is the root of the live CVS source trees
for SAX/DOM/JAXP files, and is available via anonymous CVS as usual to
all.

Note if you're looking at xml-commons in CVS that there are several
branches there, so you'll probably want to use the
xml-commons-src.tar.gz that came with your version of Xalan instead
(unless you have a specific reason - in which case, join us:
