Could you tell us what the UTF-16 characters are (their numeric values) in that 
directory name? I've seen things garbled just a bit too often when moving from 
one machine to another, and I'd like to make sure we can reproduce your testcase 
exactly.

Sanity check: What happens if, rather than counting on Xalan to recognize that 
filename for you and turn it into a file:/// URI, you write it that way in the 
first place:
                       (Example: file:///D:\����)
