John, You asked if anyone has had success with the endorsed directory. I recently did some testing with JDK 1.4.0_01 and was able to override the built-in version of Xalan (2.2.D11) by putting the latest xalan.jar and xercesImpl.jar in my /usr/j2sdk1.4.0_01/jre/lib/endorsed directory. But I wasn't doing anything with SQL extensions.
