You are building with a newer version of GCC than is supported, and a newer
version of Xerces than is supported.

The documentation is very specific as to which versions of which are
required and supported.

The solution is to get the latest Xalan code from the CVS repository.

Compiling Xalan had problems following:
http://xml.apache.org/xalan-c/readme.html#unix.  I've included the commands
I used (in proper order), environment variables, and what I did to solve
the
problems.  The Xerces compile went rather smoothly -- I compiled it before
Xalan.
