The problem is still here with xalan 2.4.1 and with xalan 2.5.1D1.
I must have messed something up when I reported it had gone away with 
2.4.1, sorry for that.

Some additional comments:

This is definitely a xalan problem. Exchanging the xerces jars does not 
change anything, only exchanging the xalan jars makes a difference.

Turning on incremental processing does not help.

If no one cares enough about performance to take a look at this, I'd still 
appreaciate any information that you can give about changes between version 
2.2.0 and 2.3.0 that might have caused this and any ideas and suggestions  
for possible workarounds.
