Hello,

We haven't yet heard of any users pushing for early support for XML
1.1 and Namespaces in XML 1.1, and the developers that we've heard from
felt that it would be better to leave it to the xslt20 branch, given that
extensions would be required to add support to the MAIN branch.

In one of my notes, I suggested that there were different levels of
support that could be provided in the MAIN branch, at least one of which
would not require any extensions to XSLT 1.0. In a private response to
that, Santiago Pericas-Geertsen wrote:

Regarding XML 1.1, I don't have strong feelings in favor or against
supporting it. On the other hand, I much rather see a complete story,
where XML 1.1 is supported as input and output (so that transforms can be
chained) than only in one direction. It's hard for me to evaluate the
importance of supporting 1.1 given that nobody that I know of is using 1.1
features.

I think that's a fair point. Simply supporting XML 1.1 on output,
but not providing additional support for XML 1.1 on input might not be
that helpful. So, we can leave this issue aside for now, and watch what
the working groups do in XSLT 2.0 and XPath 2.0 before implementing on the
xslt20 branch.

Thanks,

Henry
