Before we all go too mad here :>.

Docs - This is more than just installing.  We don't currently build the docs via
the makefile.  For installing to make sense, we actually need to be able to
build from scratch.

So whilst I (strongly) agree with the idea - am not sure it is a 1.6 thing.

sample makefiles - Again, agree with the idea, but not for 1.6.  Pulling this
apart is not necessarily trivial (although shouldn't be too bad).

New diff (proper soft linking of libs) - in CVS - please verify!
