Xalan 1.5 is not compatible with Xerces 2.3. Looking at the CVS history, the XalanTransformer was modified (s_emptyInputSource changed to a pointer and initialized in the XalanTransformer::Initialize method). I recommend upgrading to Xalan 1.6
