Okay. Just to harmonize the terminology, what the spec calls "there is no 
default namespace" is what I had called "the default namespace is not assigned" 
and I think the latter is slightly more accurate. (After all, what do you call
the result of of xmlns=""? I say it's deassigning the default.)

The Namespaces in XML spec takes the rhetorical approach there there always
*is* a default namespace, which can have an empty or non-empty URI. I hope that 
future drafts of XSLT 2.0 will adopt that terminology.

That's an interesting restriction they have on use of #default when the default 
is unassigned. It limits the flexibility a little, but I doubt that there will 
be many complaints
